In the summer of 2009 I did a three-week internship at the Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation. The Morgan is located in downtown Cleveland, Ohio in an old warehouse; it’s a pretty amazing place. At Wells I was unable to learn how to make paper, so I opted to spend some time in Cleveland in order to learn the craft.
During my internship I made an edition of pulp paintings based on an old type cut I found laying around the Morgan’s press shop. When I left the director told me I could take the cut, and I was left with 25 identical pulp paintings and one type cut I wasn’t quite sure what to do with. I entertained the idea of printing the cut on the paper, but could never seem to settle on what would be appropriate.
Not long ago I pulled out my pulp paintings. I had purchased a frame and mat while preparing to submit pieces to a show. I decided the longer frame and mat I had picked out might work well with my paper. I ended up cutting and arranging two sheets inside the mat. I like the arrangement so much I submitted it to the show. I’m not sure that this is the last thing I’ll do with this paper, but for now it has one happy home.
